Use this plant calculator to estimate the number of plants needed to properly fill a garden bed based on total area and plant spacing. This tool helps landscapers, gardeners, and homeowners avoid over-planting or under-planting and ensures accurate planning.

How the Plant Calculator Works

This calculator determines the number of plants required by dividing the total planting area by the space each plant needs to grow properly. Plant spacing is entered in inches and converted to feet to ensure accurate calculations.

If trees are present in the bed, the calculator deducts the area occupied by trees before estimating the number of plants required.

Plant Spacing Formula

Plants Required = Usable Area ÷ Area Per Plant

Where:

  • Area per plant = spacing × spacing

  • Spacing is converted from inches to feet

  • Results are rounded up to the nearest whole plant

How Trees Affect Plant Count

Trees take up significant space in a planting bed and reduce the available area for smaller plants. To account for this, the calculator subtracts a standard area for each tree before calculating the total number of plants needed.

This ensures more realistic estimates when designing mixed planting beds.

Example Plant Calculation

Volume (cubic yards) = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27

Depth is first converted from inches to feet, then volume is calculated in cubic feet and converted to cubic yards.

Why Proper Plant Spacing Matters

Proper spacing allows plants to receive adequate sunlight, water, and nutrients. Overcrowding can lead to poor growth, disease, and wasted plants, while under-planting can leave beds looking sparse and uneven.
